On the Open Seas - Pelican Original Colored Pencil Bird Portrait
On the Open Seas is an original colored pencil portrait is of a pelican floating on the water. This portrait will always have a place in my heart because it was drawn at a very difficult time in my life. In February 2022 I fell while rollerblading and broke all 3 bones in my ankle and a bone in my leg. I had to have surgery and be non load bearing for months. I’m a very active person and the endless hours of sitting around with my leg elevated were torture. I was even unable to draw an my art desk because it hurt to not have my foot up. I finally figured out a way to draw using a large board and mason jars and bins in my jar. This pelican was drawn with me, leg in cast, sitting in a recliner surrounded by pencils. I took solace in the quiet scene and the hazy reflection of the pelican. I hope that his portrait can bring some calm and relaxation to the space you choose to hang it.
On the Open Seas is the currently available in this original as well as prints. If you would like to see your favorite bird or other wildlife drawn by me, please visit my commissions page on my website at jesdickerson.com/commissions or email me at [email protected]

Details:
- This drawing is done 9x12 inches on Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper. This is an acid free paper. The pencils used are all artist quality lightfast pencils. If the print is framed properly and hung away from sunlight (helpful hints are included in your shipment), your drawing should last for generations to come.
- Colors vary from monitor to monitor so the drawing may look slightly different in person than how it does on your computer. Please try to look at the images on different devices before purchase to get the best idea of what the drawing will look like.
- The drawing comes with no watermark and no AI filter. If you look closely at the full images you may see some squiggly marks. particularly in the white areas. These are from an anti-artificial intelligence filter that I use to protect my artwork for online purposes. I have not included this filter in the close up images, so please take a look at those to see the true color and texture of the paper and the pencil marks.
*Please note that I am not perfect. There may be some small imperfections in the drawing or with the paper on original drawings. I do my best to keep the artwork as perfect as possible, but this is the reality of handmade work. Most imperfections are small and at the edges from tape removal and will be covered by mattes and frames.

Shipping:
- Please allow 3-5 business days for your drawing to ship.
- Upon shipment you will receive a tracking number via whichever email you used to purchase your artwork.
- Original drawings ship free to the United States. Please contact me for international shipping. I will do my best to find the lowest rates and work with you as I know that international fees are inhibiting.
- Drawings ship flat in a rigid mailer. I package them in an acetate sleeve to protect the drawing from water and keep it safe. When you receive it, it's best to view the drawing through the sleeve and give it to your framer in this way. Excessive handling the drawing can reduce it's longevity.
